The HDSL system provides an alternative to E1 lines by supporting a 2Mbps access over non-laded copper loop without the need for repeaters. The Carin-HDSL consists of an HDSL central office terminal (COT) and an HDSL network terminal unit (Remote).

Each HDSL Link consists of two pairs of digital transceivers that are connected by two loops (4-wire). The data from both pairs are combined to form an E1 compatible format. The system rate, transport format, E1 payload mapping method and overhead of the HDSL system meet the requirements as defined in transmission & multiplexing high bit rate digital subscriber line (HDSL) transmission system on metallic local lines, ETR IS2, ETSI.
