CARIN-AN System is an access network element which provides:

• Narrowband switched services
• Leased line services and
• Broadband services.

Through an advanced distributed switching architecture, it economically performs the functions of:

• Universal Digital Loop Carrier (UDLC)
• V5 based Integrated Digital Loop Carrier (IDLC)
• Digital Access Cross Connect (DAC)
• Channel Bank
• Optical add-drop multiplexer
• Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM)
• Mixture of above

CARIN-AN provides a versatile, compact and multifunctional platform that is capable of delivering a wide cross-section of voice and data services. It consolidates the functionality of many specialized application interfaces into a single, cost-effective platform which provides complete solutions that allows service providers to target a broader range of customers and address their specific requirements.

» System Capabilities

CARIN-AN combines the functionality of specialized network interfaces into a compact 4RU chassis. All system settings and configurations are stored in NVRAM. The system capabilities are described as follows:

» Narrowband Service Capabilities

􀂄 Digital cross-connect function. Full non-blocking, timeslot interchange (TSI) 1/0 cross-connect capability allows full DS0 grooming of any DS0 slot to any other time slot.
􀂄 V5 switch interface. The fourth generation DLC feature is provided for easy interface to digital switches.
􀂄 V.35, EIA530, RS449, LAN interfaces. Various combinations of interfaces can be used to allocate bandwidth up to a full T1 or E1 in 56K or 64Kbps increments.
􀂄 Channel bank function. Foreign exchange station/office (FXS/FXO) voice units provide off-premise extensions, order-wire services or automatic ringdown (ARD) to extend PBX, central office station or private-line voice services. Support hotline and DID (Direct inward dial).
􀂄 Multirate digital subscriber line (G.S HDSL) service. Extends high bit-rate DSL (G.S. HDSL) services delivery over 2 wire copper-line facilities at prescribed N*64Kb/s data rates.

» Broadband Service Capabilities

􀂄 ADSL Interfaces. Comply with G.992.1/G.992.2 and T1.413 Issue 2 standards. Both full rate (G.dmt) and G. lite interfaces are supported.
􀂄 G. SHDSL Interfaces. Comply with G.991.2 standards.
􀂄 IMA Interfaces. Comply with ATM Forum IMA specification 1.0, 2.0 and 2.1. can be configured for network interface or subscriber side interface.
􀂄 Virtual Lan Interfaces. Provide port based VLAN interfaces with layer-2 line speed switching. Each port is 10/100 BASET.
􀂄 ATM UNI Interfaces. Comply with ATM Forum UNI 3.1/UNI 4.0 standards. The ATM network interfaces include E1/T1 IMA, T3 and STM-1.

» System Features

􀂄 Smooth migration path to V5.2 interface and broadband services.
􀂄 Flexible digital loop carrier system with state-of -the-art technologies.
􀂄 Modular architecture (six to 672 non-blocked channels per system).
􀂄 Shelf extension capability for large system (>120 subscribers).
􀂄 Point to point, linear drop, star, tree and ring topologies.
􀂄 Automatic line concentration.
􀂄 Time slot interchange for grooming and cross connecting channel.
􀂄 Interchangeable plug-ins in general purpose slots (22 per shelf).
􀂄 High package density (6 channels per POTS plug-in) to reduce average cost per line.
􀂄 Minimal amount of common plug-ins to save star-up cost.
􀂄 Fiber, radio E1 and G.703 E1 for transmission medium interfaces.
􀂄 Options for full redundant common and transceiver plug-ins.
